Every plan comes with a monthly allowance, split into a few separate balances. Two things change the count: * **The model's multiplier.** Every chat model has one, shown next to its name in Marky's model picker. A 0.5x model uses half a word per word it writes; a 2x model uses two. The default model is one of the cheapest. * **What the model reads and thinks.** A model's reasoning counts as writing. Premium models such as Claude Opus and Claude Fable also charge for long conversations and large files they read, after a free allowance each time. In the [Quickstart](/docs/get-started/quickstart), Claude Opus 5.5 Reasoning wrote a 110-word email and used 505 words, because its reasoning and the conversation it read count too. The same request on the default model would use a small fraction of that. On the Unlimited and Teams plans, some models are labelled **Unlimited** in the model picker and don't use words at all. In tools, the **Standard model** is also free of words on those plans. A few more rules: * On the Free plan, every chat model counts at 0.2x. * On the Starter plan, models labelled **Unlimited** count at 0.1x. * Uploading an image to a tool adds 150 words. * Agents built on some models use your words when they reply to your customers. ## Image & video credits Images, videos, and the other visual features share one pool of credits. What a job costs depends on the model, the resolution, and for videos, the length. The **Generate** button always shows the cost before you start, and videos are priced per second: a 5-second clip at 4 credits per second costs 20 credits. * **Failed jobs are refunded automatically.** If a generation fails, its credits come back without you doing anything. * **You can refund a result you don't like.** Click the thumbs-down on your own image or video and its credits are returned, up to 10% of your plan's monthly credits each billing period. * **Deleting doesn't refund.** Once an image or video has been created, deleting it doesn't return its credits. ## Text-to-speech characters Text to speech uses one character per character of your script, half that with **Turbo**, and one per ten characters with OpenAI voices. Other audio features take a set amount from the same balance: | Feature | Uses | | ------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | | Voice changer and dubbing | About 2,000 per minute of audio | | Sound effects and the audio generator | 1,000 per generation | | Music and songs | 600 per generation (two tracks, 300 each) | ## When your allowance resets * **Paid plans** reset every month on your billing date. Yearly plans reset monthly too, on the same day of the month you subscribed. * **The Free plan** resets on the 1st of each month. Unused allowance doesn't roll over. Credits and words you [buy separately](/docs/account/buy-credits) are different: they're used only after your plan allowance runs out, and whatever you don't use carries over to the next period. ## The Free plan New accounts start on the Free plan. It's for trying things out: | Balance | Free plan | | ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- | | Words | 2,000 per month | | Image & video credits | 3 per month | | Text-to-speech characters | 100 per month | | Transcriptions | 2 per month | | Agents | 1, answering up to 100 messages per 30 days | On the Free plan: * Tools use the **Standard model** and make one result at a time. Tools marked as paid can be tried once. * Premium image and video models are locked, and videos are limited to a few models and short lengths. * Image downloads are for paid plans. Free accounts can download while they still have bonus credits. ## What happens when you run out | You run out of | What happens | | --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Words | On Free and Starter, Marky and tools stop until your allowance resets.
