# Phone calls

> Give your agent a phone number with Twilio so callers can talk to it.

Your agent can answer a real phone number. Callers hear your greeting, ask their questions out loud, and the agent answers in a natural voice from the same knowledge as in chat. They can interrupt it, just like a person. The number lives in your own Twilio account.

For voice calls from your website chat, see [Voice calls](/docs/agents/voice).

<Note>
  Phone calls are available on paid plans. You also need a Twilio account and a phone number that supports voice. Twilio bills the number and call minutes to your Twilio account.
</Note>

## Connect a phone number

<Steps>
  <Step title="Copy your Twilio keys">
    Sign in to the [Twilio Console](https://console.twilio.com). Under **Account Info** on the home page, copy the **Account SID** (it starts with `AC`) and the **Auth Token**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Get a voice number">
    In the Twilio Console, go to **Phone Numbers** > **Manage** > **Buy a number**, check **Voice**, and buy a number. You can also use a number you already have in Twilio.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn on Twilio's AI features">
    In the Twilio Console, go to **Voice** > **Settings** > **General**. Under **Predictive and Generative AI/ML Features Addendum**, select **Enabled** and click **Save**. Without this, calls end right after they start.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect the number">
    In Easy-Peasy.AI, open your agent, click **Channels**, and click **Connect** on **Phone Calls (Twilio)**. Fill in:

    | Field                   | What to enter                                                                                          |
    | ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
    | **Account SID** | From the Twilio Console |
    | **Auth Token** | From the Twilio Console |
    | **Twilio phone number** | In international format, such as `+15551234567` |
    | **Welcome greeting** | What the agent says when it answers, such as "Hi, you've reached Example Yoga Studio. How can I help?" |
    | **Language**            | The callers' language as a code, such as `en-US`, `en-AU`, or `de-DE`                                  |

    Click **Save**. Your keys and number are checked, and the number's voice settings in Twilio are updated for you.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Call your agent">
    Dial your Twilio number. You hear your greeting; then ask a question.
  </Step>
</Steps>

On a Twilio trial account, Twilio plays a short message first and asks you to press a key, and only the phone number you verified with Twilio can call. Upgrading your Twilio account removes both limits.

## How it works

* The agent keeps answers short and suited to speech, and remembers what was said earlier in the call.
* Your [actions](/docs/agents/actions) work on calls.
* Each phone number can be connected to one agent.
* Replies use your plan's words like chat replies. Twilio charges for the number and the call minutes in your Twilio account.

To stop answering calls, switch off **Enable integration**. Callers then hear a message that the assistant is paused.
