Five Keys to Classroom Design for Student Collaboration

Optimizing Classroom Layout for Student Engagement

Prompt

Generate an image of a well-arranged classroom based on the principles described by E. Emmer and C. Everton. The room should have groups of desks where students sit in groups of five for collaborative work. There should be specific spots for tablet storage and charging station at the front, student supplies on the side wall and a group table at the back. Wide aisles will ensure easy movement. The teacher's area will be at the front where they use a SMART Board and projector. In addition, there's a desk and a table for small group work in the back, allowing the teacher to monitor the classroom at all times. Tall objects like bookcases should not obstruct the view. Teaching supplies are stored under the windows, and student supplies next to the missing work center. The room's layout should allow all students to easily watch instructional presentations and displays, whether they are on the SMART board or bulletin boards. Highlight plants strategically placed around the room, windows letting in natural light, and other elements like a rug and lamps contributing to a warm, welcoming environment.

Original Prompt: According to E. Emmer and C. Everton there are Five Keys to Good Room Arrangement: The room arrangement is designed consistent with your instruction goals and activities. I am a big believer in group work. I believe that when students work in groups they are able to help each other out, socialize and gain a better understanding the material. For those reasons I have grouped the students into groups of five. This is the perfect size to allow them to work on projects and solve problems without getting to big. When I will work with the groups I have created a specific spot where we can work together at a table, be able to spread out and work together. Keep high traffic areas free of congestion. Many classes tend to have all of the resources located at the front of the room which leads to "traffic jam." I have designed the room to spread out these high traffic areas. Tablet storage and charging station is located in the front, student supplies and missing work is located on the side wall, while my supplies and group table is located in the back. This will divert the traffic from a single location. I also made sure to include wide aisles to help avoid these "traffic jams." Be sure students are easily seen by the teacher. I have organized the front of the room to serve as my area of instruction. This is where I will use the SMART Board, projector and deliver instruction. I have also placed my desk and a table to work with small groups in the back of the room. No matter where I am, I have organized the layout to allow me to monitor the door and students at all times. Further no tall objects (like bookcase) are located within the room for this reason. Keep frequently used teaching materials and student supplies readily available. I have organized my teaching supplies in the storage cabinets under the windows. This allows me to have easy access to my supplies with out cluttering the room, while keeping them out of the reach from students. The counter top allows me to lay out supplies or store projects when we need extra space. As for the student supplies, I have placed them on the other side of the room next to the missing work center. These supplies are organized and labeled for students to use at their own desecration. Any un-needed supplies are stored away. Be certain students can easily see instructional presentations and displays. Most of the formal instruction will take place at the front of the room using the SMART board or projector. For this reason I have arranged the desks so each student can easily see the board. In addition, the bulletin board (located on the same wall as the door) will have instruction posters which will allow students to easily assess to the content. The bulletin board at the back of the room will highlight student work. This layout allows for every student to see instructional material from every place in the classroom. Other Areas of Interest: I have placed plants around the room because it has been proven that plants tend to lead to better test scores and a more positive atmosphere within the classroom (Daly, Burchett, Torpy, 2010) The windows should help bring in natural light and keep the classroom temperature at reasonable level. The classroom decoration, plants, rug and even the lamps I will have on my desk and tables all contribute to creating a warm and welcoming environment for students to feel comfortable in.
