Restored Historical Brick Restaurant and Museum Design in South Africa

Prompt

Design a single-story brick restaurant of 200 square meters in South Africa. The roof should be vaulted, with a 500mm overhang on all sides and adorned with corrugated steel roof sheets, topped with fascia boards, gutters, rainwater downpipes, and wind vanes at the entrances. Inside, a large open dining area of at least 110 square meters, alongside a large kitchen with separate spaces for dishwashing and pantry storage. Provide unisex bathroom facilities and an additional accessible bathroom. The dining area should feature a large counter for buffets and over-the-counter meals, with large wooden sliding doors leading to a 3m-wide veranda covered by a wooden pergola. Separately, design a semi-detached 6x8m brick museum featuring a decorative Cape Dutch façade and vaulted, corrugated steel roof. Lastly, include driveways and a 12-space parking area, two of which dedicated to accessible parking.

Original Prompt: Civil Design Project SCENARIO The South African Council for National Monuments has recently restored significant historical buildings on a wine estate on Plot 36 of 61 and declared them national monuments. To accommodate visitors, permission has been obtained from the South African Council for National Monuments to build a new restaurant and small museum on the estate. You have been tasked by the South African Council for National Monuments to submit a proposed design solution for the proposed new restaurant and small museum, which will henceforth be known simply as the restaurant and museum. The restaurant must be a single-story brick structure with a maximum total area of 200 m². The roof must have a vault design with a 500 mm overhang on all sides, with corrugated steel roof sheets, finished with fascia boards, gutters, and rainwater downpipes on the edges and wind vanes at the entrances. The restaurant must consist of a large, open indoor dining area of not less than 110 m², a large kitchen with a separate dishwashing area and a separate pantry, unisex toilet facilities, and a toilet facility for people with disabilities. In the dining area, there should be a dedicated section with a large counter for serving buffet lunches on Sundays and for displaying and selling over-the-counter meals and refreshments on all other days. There should be wide wood-paneled sliding doors, with three or more panels, along two adjacent walls of the dining area leading out to an adjacent 3 m-wide veranda, which runs along the same two adjacent walls of the restaurant. The veranda, which is not included in the 200 m² of the restaurant, must be covered by a wooden pergola so that it can be used as an additional outdoor dining area. The kitchen must have a floor area of not less than 35 m² and be located at the back of the restaurant. The kitchen must be separated from the dining area by a brick wall, with a single-entry 180° swing door to the kitchen and a single-exit 180° swing door from the kitchen to the dining area. There must be a single sink, built-in cabinets, and sufficient work surfaces for food preparation and placement of kitchen appliances, as well as space in the kitchen for two large refrigerators and two large industrial stoves. From the kitchen, there must be access to a separate dishwashing area with two double sinks and space for two dishwashers, as well as a separate, lockable pantry. Both the kitchen and the dishwashing area must have an external door and windows. The unisex toilet facility must be directly accessible from the indoor dining area of the restaurant. The facility must consist of FIVE separate cubicles, each with a toilet, a hand basin, and its own small window. One of the cubicles must have a larger door and more space to accommodate people in wheelchairs. The building for the museum must be a single-story, semi-detached 6 x 8 m brick structure adjoining the restaurant but sharing a common wall with the restaurant. The museum must be accessible from the veranda, but there should be no direct access from any part of the restaurant. To complement the estate's heritage, the entrance to the museum must have a typical centrally placed decorative Cape Dutch facade above a double wooden door with wooden sliding sash windows on both sides. The museum must have a vaulted roof with a corrugated steel roof sheet finish. The new restaurant and museum must have sufficient electrical lighting and switch power points in all rooms and areas. All sewage and wastewater from the restaurant must be connected to the manhole on the municipal sewer line in Heuwel Street. Included in the design must be driveways and a parking area with 10 standard-sized parking spaces and, located near the restaurant, two parking spaces for people with disabilities.
