Art Deco takes its name from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. It spread to New York skyscrapers, ocean liners and cinemas, and became the look of the Jazz Age.
It celebrates luxury and the machine age: symmetry, stepped shapes, sunbursts and chevrons, with rich materials everywhere.
A modern Art Deco room keeps the drama with fewer, bolder pieces: one velvet sofa, one geometric rug, one sunburst mirror and plenty of brass.

Softer walls and seating
Pick one deep color for the walls or upholstery, add black for contrast and let brass or gold do the shine. Blush or cream softens the look.
Chevrons, fans, sunbursts and stepped shapes on rugs, wallpaper, tiles and mirrors.
Rounded sofas, channel-tufted chairs and barrel-back seats, usually in velvet.
Brass legs, gold frames and polished hardware catch the light.
Sunburst and stepped mirrors add sparkle and make the room feel bigger.
Tiered chandeliers, fan-shaped wall lights and glass globes.
Matching pairs of lamps, chairs and side tables give the room a formal balance.

Art Nouveau came just before, with flowing lines inspired by plants and flowers. Art Deco swapped those curves for straight lines, geometry and the look of the machine age.
Mid-century modern is simpler and more relaxed, with warm wood and tapered legs. Art Deco is formal and glamorous, with velvet, brass and bold patterns.

Deep jewel tones like emerald, sapphire and burgundy, plus black, cream and blush, almost always with gold or brass.
Keep the walls calm, choose a few bold pieces and use one geometric pattern. A velvet sofa, a brass lamp and a sunburst mirror are enough.
