Choosing a toothbrush should be based on three criteria: brush head size, brush shape, and bristle hardness. The ideal toothbrush for Asians should have a small head, neatly arranged bristles without any out-of-place ones, and bristles hard enough to cause a slight feel when rubbed back and forth on the back of the hand but not causing prickly pain. Misconception Three: Sharing toothpaste within the family is okay. Oral bacteria attach themselves to toothbrush bristles, raising the risk of cross-contamination when multiple people share one tube of toothpaste. Each family member should have their independent toothpaste and toothbrush. Misconception Four: You don't need to brush if you have lost all your teeth. Oral hygiene still matters for the elderly as their oral mucosa, gums, and alveolar bone need care. They should rinse their mouth after meals and use a soft toothbrush to clean, stimulate, and massage their gums. Clean hands can alternatively be used to massage the gums.
